The residents of Konoha are frantically running away from the explosions and monsters that Pain unleashed. A little girl gets knocked down to the ground and she catches the attention of a giant centipede summoned by Pain. The centipede charges at the girl but Sakura arrives in time to send the monster flying with a punch.

A bunch of other ninjas including Iruka arrive on the scene, and Iruka tells Sakura that "Akatsuki" is behind the attacks. In the Hokage’s office, Tsunade is telling a messenger frog to retrieve Naruto, but two of three village advisors show up and disagree with the decision. The two advisors state that they cannot allow Naruto and the nine-tailed fox to fall into the hands of "Akatsuki", but Tsunade grabs them both by the collar and states that they can’t treat Naruto like a child any more. After yelling at the two advisors, Tsunade drops them to the ground and tells them that they lack the faith to believe in Naruto.

The two advisors decide to retreat for now, and as they leave the office, Shizune from the autopsy unit arrives. In a destroyed part of the village, Kakashi continues to fight against Pain but finds that his techniques are not working. Another one of Pain’s bodies appear nearby and Kakashi now finds himself in outnumbered. Back in the Hokage’s office, Shizune explains her findings to Tsunade. Shizune has discovered that the piercings on Pain’s bodies act like chakra receivers and probably have something to do with Pain’s powers. Judging by the intel from the Information Bureau, Tsuande deduces that Pain is the one attacking the village. With this in mind, Tsunade orders the messenger frog to give the information to Fukasaku as well.

Tsunade also orders Shizune to give her findings to the interrogation unit, and she orders black op squads to guard Shizune and the interrogators. After all the humans leave the office, the messenger frog gets ready to go back to Myobokuzan, but before he could leave he is killed by village advisor Danzo.
